Labor Day
Weekend 2026
How the last big camping weekend of the summer actually played out
The 2026 Labor Day Weekend, By the Numbers
On a same-store basis across the RoverPass platform — comparing only campgrounds active during both the 2025 and 2026 Labor Day windows — the last big camping weekend of the summer came in softer on volume and steadier on everything else. Bookings fell 5.3%, but the trips that did happen ran longer (3.00 nights, up 2.4%) and were booked further out (59.9 days, up 1.7). The one metric that moved against the trend was cancellations, up 3.1 points to 15.74%. These percentages reflect the RoverPass footprint, not US-industry-wide totals.
Methodology: Same-store comparison — only counts reservations from campgrounds that had at least one stay in both the 2026 Labor Day window (September 4–8) and the 2025 Labor Day window (August 29–September 2). Both holidays fell on a Monday, so the windows are weekday-aligned and the check-in-day mix in Table 4 is directly comparable — unlike the July 4th edition, there is no calendar artifact to correct for. Same-store removes the platform-growth artifact that inflates raw YoY when new campgrounds join. Stays are filtered to ≤ 14 nights to exclude long-term campers whose stays overlap the holiday. Outlier screening ran on this window and found nothing to exclude. One caveat on cancellations: the 2026 window closed on September 8 and this report published September 10, so late cancellations are still landing. The 2026 cancellation rate is a floor; the 2025 figure is fully settled. First-party reservation data, no surveys.

Fewer bookings, longer stays — and more cancellations
Labor Day closes the summer season, and it is the cleanest holiday comparison we get: the holiday fell on a Monday in both 2025 and 2026, so the windows line up weekday for weekday. Nothing in the check-in mix below needs a calendar asterisk.
Across the same-store cohort of US campgrounds active in both windows, holiday reservations were down 5.3% year over year — almost exactly the 5.8% decline we measured over July 4th. Two soft summer holidays in a row, measured against the same set of parks both years, reads as a demand trend rather than noise.
The trips that happened were bigger commitments. Average stay rose to 3.00 nights from 2.93 (up 2.4%), and the share of 4–7 night stays grew 1.1 points to 19.8% while one-night stays fell 1.7 points to 23.8%. Lead time stretched to 59.9 days from 58.2, with bookings made 60+ days out gaining 1.9 points. Fewer people came, but the ones who did planned earlier and stayed longer.
Cancellations moved the wrong way. The holiday-window cancellation rate hit 15.74%, up 3.1 points from 12.61%. That is the largest single move in this edition, and it runs opposite the longer-lead-time signal — booking earlier usually means more time to change your mind, so the two are likely connected. Worth noting that this figure will only rise: late cancellations were still landing when we pulled the data.
Phone kept losing share. Online direct rose to 59.5% of the channel mix (up 1.1 points) and marketplace to 16.7% (up 0.9), both taken out of phone, which dropped 2.0 points to 23.8%. Phone has declined year over year in all three holiday editions we have published (−3.0 over Memorial Day, −0.1 over July 4th, −2.0 now). Marketplace turning back up is the one break from the July 4th pattern, where it fell 1.1.
Parties got slightly smaller. Average party size fell to 2.45 people from 2.55, with adults down 0.08, children down 0.02, and pets down 0.02 per booking. Pet-included bookings slipped 0.6 points to 29.7% and bookings with children slipped 0.3 points to 5.9%. Small moves, all pointing the same direction.
Methodology note: All figures reflect bookings on the RoverPass platform only — not the full US campground industry. RoverPass powers hundreds of campgrounds but does not cover every operator, so percentage breakdowns (channel mix, lead time, length of stay) can be skewed by which campgrounds happen to be on the platform. A single large operator joining or leaving can move any one of these by several percentage points. Use these numbers as a directional same-store year-over-year read on the operators in our footprint, not as an industry-wide census. Same-store means only campgrounds active in both Labor Day windows (September 4–8, 2026 and August 29–September 2, 2025). Reservations and inventory holds (operator-side blocks) both count as bookings; deleted/released holds count as cancellations. Stays are filtered to 14 nights or fewer to exclude long-term campers. Outlier screening ran on this window and found no campgrounds above threshold, so no bookings were excluded. The 2026 cancellation rate is a floor — the window closed September 8 and late cancellations are still arriving. First-party reservation data, no surveys.
